Common Issues for Electronic Locks
Today electronic smart locks have become very popular. Things have become much easier and more convenient as you don’t have to worry about losing your key anymore and you can quickly change access codes whenever you want.
It is very simple to grant temporary accesses code to service providers like the babysitter or dog walker access when they need it, but still even smart locks can have some issues.
Battery Problems
Most electronic locks use batteries in order to operate the locking mechanism and to stay connected to your Wi-Fi. If your smart lock stops working it might just need new batteries.
Code Issues
While a physical key is no longer being used you do need to remember a digital code to unlock your smart lock and it is not uncommon to forget it.
To avoid this from happening write down your code somewhere safe or even better save it in your phone as one of your contacts. If you forget your code there is away to reset it to manufacturer state, just check the owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer.
Communication Errors
Sometimes it stops working because of a lost signal. To fix this just take out the batteries for one minute and then put them back in. This usually restart the lock and makes it available again. If it doesn’t contact the manufacturer for help.
Mechanical Issues
Despite what you think, electronic locks use the same principal like regular locks and even though there is no need of a physical key they can also suffer from the same mechanical problems.
Strike plate issues occur when this metal piece which the door latch fits into is misaligned. Over time the strike plate may become loose and can prevent the latch from operating smoothly. In order to resolve this issue just tightened the strike plate and make sure it is straight.
Hinge problems are another common problem and a poorly attached door hinges can cause the door to be caught in an unbalanced position which cause the strike plate and bolt not fit properly and the door won’t be able to be locked. Properly securing the hinges can prevent this misalignment and fix this problem.
Like with any other lock dirt and lack of lubrication can jam the lock. Regular cleaning with a damp rag and annual lubrication with a silicon based dry lubricant can ensure that your lock will operate smoothly for many years.
